Submersible Check Valve vs. Inline Check Valve — What's the Difference? A submersible check valve like the 617-SB threads directly onto your pump's discharge port inside the well casing. An inline check valve goes above ground on the pipe.

Why use a check valve on a well pump? Without a check valve, water in the pipe above your pump drains back down into the well every time the pump shuts off. This causes the pump to work harder on each startup and can lead to pressure tank problems and premature pump wear. A check valve holds that water column in place. If the water column drains away so does the pressure in the house causing the pressure switch to turn back on and making the pump cycle on and off repeatedly.
